Section II: A Historical Overview of Latin America

A. This section presents the general contours of Latin American history, following the period of independence to present day and close analysis of the other Americans.

1. In the chapter on Democracy and Dictators, what is the assessment of the historical development of the region vis a vis the impact of liberalism and the challenge from socialism? What were the central ideas of liberalism and how did they clash with the ideas of socialism in Latin America? Provide examples from the historical sections in the chapter on Mexico, Cuba, Chile during the cold war era and the latest developments in Venezuela and Bolivia. Choose at least two countries.

2. In the chapter on the other Americans, what do the authors conclude on the role of the indigenous and afro Latin Americans in the history of the region?Provide examples from the readings on the various groups in Latin America.

Requirements:
Respond to the basic questions for the assignment.
Written Assignment should be 2 pages in length.
The paper must be typed, double-spaced, and 12 font size.
Citations: In the citations of the readings ,follow the author, date, and page system within the paper. For example, (Chasteen 2000, 3), (Garcia 2001, 10) (Chicago Style) This system of citations is called the Chicago Style and the instructions are in Module 10) Do not follow any other variation of the Chicago Style but the instructions I have attached

Discussions Assignment

Pick 3 of the submissions in the Discussion assignment.
Critique the essays: focus on the comprehension of the student?s understanding of concepts, ideas, theoretical frameworks, and complete application of the readings and class notes.
The critique of the submissions must be 250 word long.
Suggest possible changes to the student?s understanding of the materials in the class. Did the student cover all of the aspects of the questions? If yes, explain, if no, explain. It is not sufficient to respond that the student covered all aspects of the questions: you need to support your response. Cite the readings or class notes to support your critique of the papers.
Provide substantive responses, avoid short and superficial responses to the submissions (this is a great paper; fantastic job; you covered all of the points in the assignment, etc. The critique will be stronger if you fully develop your ideas and support it by citing the readings and/or class notes.
Do not critique style or grammar.
